Lawrence of Arabia, or Thomas Edward Lawrence, made his last home in Dorset when he retired to Clouds Hill in 1935. Situated on the southern edge of the parish and once a humble foresters cottage, Lawrence altered things to reflect his own rather austere style of life. Today it is run by the National Trust as a visitor attraction, but then it was a retreat from Army and RAF life and a place where he could indulge in music and reading. Sadly his other love of riding fast motor bikes caused his death only a few months after finally moving in.
The full story is available from the T.E. Lawrence Society and from information available in the cottage - so why not visit and find out more about this remarkable man who did so much in his relatively short life - archaeologist, Army officer, RAF Aircraftsman, author, developer and tester of high speed recue boats - just to give a flavour.
